Hurricane Electric Expands Energy Efficient Colocation Facility [11/06/2009 ]

New 24,000 square-foot expansion secures large incentive from Pacific Gas and Electric

FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Hurricane Electric, the world's largest IPv6-native Internet backbone and leading colocation provider, today announced the third build out of its 208,000 square-foot Fremont2 data center. This expansion project secured a substantial incentive from Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E).

The newly added 24,000 square-foot space (formerly an Apple manufacturing facility) has a power capacity of three megawatts and employs some of the most efficient equipment and techniques available, including:

  • Eaton Corporation's 9395 UPS system, which operates at 99% efficiency in Energy Saver Mode
  • McQuay's Maverick II(TM) Rooftop HVAC System, featuring variable-frequency drives (VFDs), powered exhaust, and a 100% economizer mode
  • Cold aisle/hot aisle data center layout

"Our energy efficient infrastructure reduces our carbon footprint," said Benny Ng, Hurricane Electric's Director of Infrastructure. "But it also reduces our energy bills, making our services more cost-competitive."

The facility is outfitted with popular colocation amenities, including 24/7 on-site knowledgeable staff, sophisticated up-flow HVAC systems, and uninterruptible power sources with back-up generators. The facility also contains a state-of-the-art digital-video surveillance system that monitors every entrance, exit, hallway and rack in the facility.

At 8:30 AM today, Hurricane Electric will hold a grand opening event to celebrate the new data center. Mark Bramfitt of PG&E will discuss the incentive that Hurricane Electric secured.
