This invention relates to wood protectants that contain an amount of polymeric hydrocarbon compounds comprising amino groups, said protectants being preferably polycationic. The use according to the invention of polymers comprising amino groups, said polymers being preferably cationic due to an amount of quaternary amino groups, as effective ingredients in wood protectants relates to the surprising finding that on the one hand such a combination of properties of polymers provides fungicidal properties for the wood and on the other hand that the polymers are permanently associated with the treated wood so that the fungicidal properties thereof are available to the wood for a long time. In another embodiment of the invention, the polymers comprising amino groups, said polymers preferably containing quaternary amino groups, are applied to the wood as an adhesion promoter for organic coatings, for example paints or plastic films.
