Oct. 10--GULFPORT -- Police cited a driver for spilling his dump truck's contents on the road Friday after a motorcycle crashed along a mile-long sludge spill on Dedeaux Road, said Police Chief Alan Weatherford.

The motorcycle driver was not seriously injured but it was the second time this week that sludge has been spilled on a roadway in Gulfport, Weatherford said.

Dedeaux was blocked off a couple of hours on Monday for a cleanup between Latimer and Lorraine roads. The spill occurred around 8 a.m.

Weatherford said Noland Brown of Gulfport was westbound in a dump truck owned by W.C. Fore Trucking Inc.

Patrick Farrell, also of Gulfport, was westbound when he hit the sludge and lost control of his motorcycle.

Brown received a citation from police.

A section of Lorraine Road at Wilkes Bridge was shut down Tuesday from a different sludge spill.

W.C. Fore voluntarily responded immediately to both spills and handled the cleanup, Weatherford said.

Police Lt. Brian Smith said Lorraine Road was closed about 45 minutes for the cleanup on Tuesday.

No citations were issued in that spill because the truck had left and could not be identified.

W.C. "Cotton" Fore, company owner, said both trucks were his but said it was top soil, not sludge.

His drivers are hauling it from the Port of Gulfport.

"It's in liquid form," Fore said.

Both spills occurred after a car pulled out in front of a truck, Fore said.

"The driver locks on the brakes and the liquid spills out of the top of the trailer," said Fore.

"We would rather spill a little mud than hurt someone."

Fore said his company has a designated cleanup crew.

"We can respond in 15 minutes," he said.
