EC County plans appliance drop-off [The Leader-Telegram, Eau Claire, Wis.] [09/21/2009 ]

Sep. 18--Obsolete appliances can be dropped off Saturday at three sites for Eau Claire County's 12th annual recycling roundup for computers, appliances, TVs and other electronics.

The drop-off sites are:

-9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the county Exposition Center, 5530 Fairview Drive.

-9 a.m. to noon at the county's highway shop at Wren Road and Highway HH, just east of Foster.

-9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at First Choice Computer Recycling, 1125 Starr Ave.

On the day of the event and today at First Choice, the county is offering discounted rates on appliance recycling.

Home appliances including dryers, washers, dishwashers, microwave ovens, stoves and water heaters can be dropped off for $5.

There is a $15 fee for air conditioners, dehumidifiers, freezers, furnaces and refrigerators.

Home electronics, including TVs, VCRs, computers and monitors have recycling costs ranging from $3 to $20, depending on the item.

Some computer components and accessories will be recycled at no charge.

A complete list of appliance recycling fees can be found at www.co.eau-claire.wi.us/eauclaire/09LTdisplayad.pdf.

Businesses bringing more than 10 items must use the First Choice location Saturday.

The discounted rates will be available at First Choice today for people who want to avoid potentially long lines Saturday.

The county's drop-off event is open to all residences and businesses, even those outside Eau Claire County.

There have been 2,178 TVs, 4,600 appliances and 7,070 computers recycled in the past eight years at the county's event.

For those looking to buy a new energy-efficient appliance through the government's "cash for refrigerators" program, you don't need to trade in an old appliance to get a rebate on a new model.
