Himfr.com Compares Three Kinds of Smartphones [09/02/2009 ]

BEIJING, Sept. 1 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- Himfr.com, one of China's leading B2B search platforms with more than 30 B2B industry websites to its name, compares three kinds of smartphones which sell well on the internet.

The three kinds of operating systems for smartphones are Apple's iPhone OS, Google's Android and Palm's webOS. With the arrival of the three operating systems, smartphones have developed very quickly, and various new models have emerged. The iPhone 3GS, the HTC Hero and the Palm Pre are currently the most representative models for these three platforms.

The iPhone OS, Android, and webOS all are from strong companies, which lays a foundation for outstanding performance. Due to all having adopted multi-touch capacity and the same core browser, the three are very similar with regards to interface operation and access to the Internet. No doubt, this will be the future trend for mobile phones.

Although they are similar in terms of touch capability, being from the three different manufacturers the design models are very different in appearance; each has its own unique features. As a result, the iPhone 3GS, the HTC Hero, and the Palm Pre offer three very different user experiences.

The iPhone 3GS, the HTC Hero, and the Palm Pre have many similarities:

Screen resolution is HVGA-level, that is, 320x480 pixels, for all three. The only difference is the size, the smallest being the Palm Pre at 3.1 inches, the largest being the iPhone 3GS at 3.5 inches. On the other hand, the body weight is coincidentally 135 grams for all three, and all three have a 3.5 mm headphone jack; the processor frequency is also very close.

On the other hand, the iPhone 3G, the HTC Hero, and the Palm Pre differ greatly in terms of appearance. The iPhone 3GS's candy bar-like big-screen design has become a classic. The latter two mobile phones have adopted arc designs; the HTC Hero carries on the tradition of the G1's upturned chin-style design with a trackball navigation key for better grip and ease of operation. The Palm Pre has an arc slider design and is also equipped with a Qwerty-style keyboard.

Operation Experience:

We can see from the size comparison that the iPhone 3GS, the HTC Hero, and the Palm Pre weigh almost exactly the same, but the differences in their operational experiences stem from body styling. The HTC Hero navigational keypad has only six keys besides the trackball, is convenient to operate and has many functions for every key. With the Palm Pre, many shortcuts can be set using the whole keyboard to start corresponding procedures, and input is also more convenient, but this model does not support Chinese.

Next is the main interface, which is the biggest area of difference. The Palm Pre interface is divided into three sections, the above is a switch to state bar, the middle is a card-style task manager (open programs can be seen), and there is a fast application icon on the bottom. The list page is displayed in the lower right corner of the virtual keys and opens the list of programs. The HTC Hero's interface can be divided into seven main pages; clicking the procedures button and the bottom of the screen is like opening the drawer to open the list of programs. The iPhone 3GS appends all programs listed; the interface page is clear and direct. These three different styles of UI design and operation may provide for different user experiences, but fortunately they are all relatively smooth, only the differing in style; there are no obvious advantages or disadvantages.

Network Aspects:

The iPhone 3GS, the HTC Hero, and the Palm Pre use Webkit as the core browser; speed is very good and page restoration is as well. With a multi- touch screen, you can use your finger to drag and zoom, which is very convenient. The HTC Hero supports Flash, which is temporarily unavailable on the Palm Pre and iPhone 3GS.

Text Input:

Android and the iPhone OS have built-in rich voice support, which also includes Chinese, and both support Chinese pinyin input. In this regard, the Palm is weaker, as now there is no good Chinese input method.
