Western Heights offers free clothing giveaway [The Duncan Banner, Okla.] [07/20/2009 ]

Jul. 17--It's difficult to believe with temperatures soaring into triple digits, but school begins in less than a month, and moms are already thinking about back-to-school clothes.

As it has done four times before, Western Heights Baptist Church at 2305 W. Beech is holding a free one-day clothing giveaway from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 1 in the fellowship hall.

The first event in 2006 drew more than 113 families, and last year's giveaway served 153 families, said Pam Gdanski, chairman.

"This year, with all the layoffs, we're expecting more families. It would be nice if the economy was better and the layoffs did not occur, but we will do our best to have plenty of clothes for all ages," she said.

Unlike garage sales, the church's offerings are free and can be browsed in air-conditioned comfort in its fellowship hall. Items are sorted by size, and most are hung on hangers or folded on tables for easy access.

Although the focus is on back-to-school clothes, there will be clothing of all kinds for the entire family, along with purses, shoes and other items.

"We would like people to think ahead. Just because it's hot now, it won't be in a few months, and children will also need winter clothing and coats. Now is the time for people to be on the lookout for those things," Gdanski said.

Anyone who would like to donate new or gently-used clothing for the event may call the church office at 580-255-3881 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. weekdays to make arrangements. Messages left at that number at other hours will be returned, she said.

There is no proof of income or need necessary in order to receive clothing. Anyone who arrives during the designated hours will be welcome to choose the items they can use, Gdanski said.
